As obvious as Mike's eyes landing on Will again, and again, and again.
Vecna had torn Hawkins in half. The air tasted like chemicals and ash. Schools shut down, and soldiers patrolled the streets like the world had tilted just past survivable. Everything was wrong, but Mike Wheeler wasn’t complaining, because two months ago the Byers had moved in with the Wheelers.
Mike’s breath stumbled in his chest. He tried to ground himself, tried to think of anything, anything except the awareness of how close Will was (he was sitting at a normal distance), except the shape of Will’s mouth when he spoke. Maybe if he counted to ten, he could shake off whatever the hell this was instead of staring at Will’s lips like some creep.
One… two… three… four…
When he lifted his eyes again, Will’s eyes were still on him, he was still talking, and he looked so alive.
Five… six—
Mike’s pulse thudded hard enough that the numbers broke apart in his head. The air felt too thin, his chest too tight, everything tilting just slightly off-center around the curve of Will’s smile.

However Joyce is convinced attending a prestigious private school will give him a better shot at getting to where he wants. Will is scared to have such a sudden big change of environment, he isn't prepared for just how competitive the place is...or how he'll make an enemy on his first day.
How could his presence cause someone such irritation?
That someone being Mike Wheeler.
Mike felt it was his duty from day one to make Will's life a living hell, to let him know that he is nothing. Mike is just better than him. He'll always win.
Will wanted and urged himself to stay away from him, but there was something about him that sparked curiosity within him.

Each chapter is about 2000-3500 words
It's been a year since the events of Season 4, since everything fell apart and somehow pieced itself back together. The town is still healing, soldiers guard each gate but everyone is pretending to move on.
Mike tries to, he really does. He runs Hellfire now - becoming the Dungeon Master in replacement of Eddie. Finally, he starts to tell El he loves her and keeps smiling like nothing's changed. But with Will being quiet, distant, and still painting things he won't explain - something inside Mike starts to stir again.
They're best friends. That's all they're supposed to be, right? But maybe it's what they never said that's starting to mean the most.
