His ears roared with static, his brain stuck on one gnawing, clawing question: Why did Hollander didn't tell him that he's going to be a father? The answer was obvious—because Shane Hollander didn’t need him, never had. The realization burned like cheap vodka in his throat, bitter and suffocating.
Some alpha reporter with slicked-back hair and a smirk dripping condescension leaned forward, microphone poised like a weapon. "Shane, what happened to all that talk about never bending for an alpha? Seems like someone finally put you on your back."
"And how are you so sure I'm the one who bent?" Hollander's voice cut through the noise like a blade, smooth and lethal. The room fell silent instantly. Ilya froze. Sperm donor? The unfamiliar English phrase buzzed in his skull like a trapped wasp. Behind him, Connors snorted into his protein shake. "Oh Jesus fucking Christ," he muttered, wiping his mouth. "He just called his baby daddy a walking ATM for cum."

All of this makes the trade an unlikely one; however, it seems to be just the right time for the Metros to snag a star like Rozanov. After many lackluster performances from the Metros these past few months, it only makes sense…”
The anchor continues as a clip of Rozanov from a post-game interview last year plays—he’s shirtless and sweaty, smirking into the camera. And then he does that…that wink. Shane just stares up at the screen, dumbfounded. He’s not listening to the details anymore, but the words echo in his head.

Shane has a panic attack before the playoff finals. Who else finds him but Rosanov? Months later, Ilya is unable to shake the encounter and tries to get Hollander to let him in again. Both struggle with the unexpected vulnerability of it all. Set some time after Vegas, when both are falling hard but still stuck in denial.

Summary
By his own estimation, Shane is at least a metre away from where Rozanov is leaning against the lamppost, smoking another cigarette.
Except, he’s not there anymore.
Instead, his face is millimetres from Rozanov’s, his body braced for impact while Rozanov chokes on his smoke to avoid breathing it directly into Shane’s mouth. The car honks again for good measure and the driver flips both of them off before speeding down Comm Ave, accident averted.
“What was that, Hollander?” Rozanov asks thickly. The words land on Shane’s lips.
It takes a year for Shane Hollander to realize that he's somehow magically protecting his rival, Ilya Rozanov, from harm. It takes another several years, and a lot of hooking up, for him to figure out why.

He doesn't really know what he wants to say. He can't tell Rosanov straight up that he's sorry he won't see him; he can't say he wishes he was there. He doesn't want to know what Rosanov would say back. None of the options feel good.
