Ilya has probably already reached out to the next person on his list — someone less boring, less demanding, more responsive to instructions. Obedient. Maybe untouched. Perhaps as inexperienced as Shane was in 2008. Someone good.
After all, Shane has nothing left to offer anymore.
Or: the aftermath of their Las Vegas encounter leaves Shane struggling to stay afloat. Ilya isn't there to help.

Ilya and Shane, with Anya on their heels, answer the door. On the other side is Sofya Rozanova, Ilya's niece, thirteen years old and looking just as terrified and uncertain as Shane and Ilya feel.
Shane can't help but feel a twinge of relief at that. At least, for the moment, they're all on the same page.

He watches as Marleau stands up and apologizes to Shane — Ilya has no idea if it was a clean hit, but from Marleau’s face, he’s pretty sure it was accidental. And then Ilya waits for Shane to get up.
He doesn’t move.
Marleau glances at him as Ilya skates up to Shane, putting a hand on his shoulder as he says, “Hollander?” When he gets no response, he says it again, this time louder and with a steadily rising sense of dread. “Hollander, come on, get up.”

“Well yeah,” Shane said, his voice took the slightly bratty tone that Rozanov loves. “You keep your house cold as shit.” This made Rozanov burst out laughing. He went towards his dresser to pull out a hoodie. He pauses as he sees Shane’s perfectly folded outfit settle neatly on the wood. He lets a small smile cross his lips within the privacy his back has provided from Shane. Like in every piece of clothing Rozanov has ever had the luxury of peeling off of Shane’s body a neat S.H. was written on the label of Shane’s jacket. He was about to toss an old CCM sweatshirt to Shane when a different one caught his eye. The team had got them this year, they were black with the Boston Bear’s logo in yellow. The hoodie was branded with Rozanov’s number and last name on it. The thought of Hollander, Montreal’s and the NHL’s golden boy, wearing his name did something to him. I guess he didn’t care that Shane was a hockey god, the only thing he cared about was the fact that in a few moments he was going to see Shane wearing his last name. Something he couldn’t let himself dream of.

Summary
Finally committed to each other, Shane and Ilya ring in a new year with some brave choices.
Even from here in the city, the sky is brilliantly clear and leaning back against the brick and looking up, I can see stars glittering. I pull out a cigarette and light it, taking a long first drag and letting it out with a sigh. “Goodbye, old friend,” I tell it in Russian, holding it up between thumb and forefinger. “You’ve been a great comfort, but it’s time to part ways.” I smoke in silence after that, hearing a few smaller fireworks already going off somewhere a few streets over, the whistle of a bottle rocket and the double pop. The passing of years is, to a point, quite arbitrary, but there is something about these cold, long, dark nights when the air is polished clear and clean and the stars shimmer a little brighter that draws me into reflection every year. Sometimes it’s good, reminding me of all the highlights and successes. Sometimes it reminds me how little I’ve done, how much my life is a blur of hockey and hockey-adjacent activities, but not a whole lot else.
Except of course for Shane. There is always Shane.
