Summary
For John Watson, the Second Afghan War brought nothing but misfortune and disaster. Wounded at the Battle of Maiwand, abandoned by a government which sought and failed to make use of him, he is scraping together a dismal existence in a supernatural underworld within London which even he can scarcely bring himself to believe exists.
Meanwhile, Sherlock Holmes, consulting detective, is attempting to solve a strange case which puts his personal axiom to the ultimate test. It turns out, when one's definition of 'impossible' is too narrow, it becomes damnably difficult to discover the truth.
