Thuở nhỏ, Han Wangho đã nhiều lần nghe ông nội kể về Tu La thành, một tòa thành luôn chuyển động, như một sinh vật sống. Ông nói chính ông đã từng lạc vào đó, thấy nó thở, nhìn nó trút từng đợt thiên tai để tẩy sạch những linh hồn ô uế đang bám trên lưng. Đường thoát duy nhất, theo lời ông, là địa ngục.
Wangho chưa bao giờ tin. Ông nội không bao giờ nói rõ cách vào hay cách ra. Một cựu quân nhân từng sống sót sau viên đạn xé toạc lá phổi như ông, chẳng lý gì lại sợ một truyền thuyết.
Cho đến những ngày cuối đời.
Bệnh phổi trở nặng và trong mê sảng, ông thì thào rằng mình đã thoát khỏi Tu La thành nhờ một người bạn kì lạ. Và không ngừng gọi một cái tên lạ: Lee Sanghyeok.
Sau khi ông qua đời, câu chuyện ấy cũng bị chôn theo.
Rất lâu sau, khi Wangho gần như đã quên hết mọi thứ về tòa thành biết thở kia, anh lại vô tình đi lạc vào nó.
