Sapphie Bakes a Cake!

Summary:

Sapphie attempts to bake a deluxe chocolate cake only to have to deal with some eager hungry Jewelpets who also want a taste.

Notes:

It's not necessarily based off of any canon itself but a combination of the various different canons. That said Happiness is probably the closest canon to how I write the characters. (Setting is slightly different though.)

Thank you for reading!

Work Text:

It was a normal day in Jewelland. In the bakery Sapphie was hard at work making a cake for herself. It was a rich chocolate cake with several layers of chocolate along with chocolate filling and hot fudge between the different layers. And to top it off she was going to decorate it with a strawberry spread. It was an ambitious idea but Sapphie was confident she could pull it off. After all cooking is a science! Wait... wrong show.

Sapphie was happily mixing up the batter, having her mixer spin the batter around and round. A rich chocolate aroma filled the air and pleased her nose. She dipped a finger into the batter, pulled it out with the rich brown chocolate batter dripping for her finger, slowly brought it towards her mouth, and licked it.

It tasted yummy! It filled her taste buds with delight. She wanted to grab a big spoon and scoop all of that rich chocolately goodness straight into her mouth. You know what any sane person, animal, or jewelpet would do. After all the best part of baking is eating the dough!

But Sapphie had better self control than most. She grabbed one of the trays and poured the chocolate cake batter into it. She put the tray in the warm preheated oven. She poured more trays like this and put them all in the oven so she could cook. She turned the timer on and sat down on one of the chairs and sat there and waited for her cakes to be ready. The rich aroma of the chocolate filled the air. She would need to prepare the other parts of the cake but the tired dog wanted a little bit of rest before she got back to baking.

So she read. And read she did. She got invested into the captivating stories of Phi and e. She was on the edge of her seat wondering if they were going to be able to beat the big bad: Square root of -1. Phi and e were both ready with swords and staff in hands, but Square root of -1 was leering over them with a massive hammer. The heroes were ready to attack when suddenly she felt one of her long doggy ears being lifted up! She felt something warm lean up against the back of her body and press their body against hers.

"Whatcha making?" asked a familiar peppy voice.

Sapphie spun around and saw Ruby behind her looking over her shoulder at the cakes cooking in the oven.

"Oh," Sapphie said. "I'm baking a cake."

"Ooh a cake!" Ruby cheered. "Ruby loves cake!"

Sapphie rubbed the back of her head and stared as Ruby was looking at her so expectantly. Her eyes were sparkling and staring at Sapphie. She was still leaning over her shoulder and the two of them were face to face without much distance between the two. Sapphie chuckled a little bit. "Sorry Ruby, I was making this cake for myself."

"For yourself?" Ruby asked. She tilted her head to the side. "But wouldn't you want to give your good old friend Ruby some of your delicious cake?"

Ruby's eyes sparkled as if her eyes were jewels and her face pushed through the negative space between their faces until it was right up against the stressed out dog's face. Saying no is hard. Espeically with an expectant sparkling face right in front of one's face. But Sapphie also wanted all of the richness of the cake for herself. It was already taking a herculean effort to not eat all of the dough! Besides she had a feeling once she allowed one other Jewelpet to have some of the cake, she was going to get flooded with requests.

She shook her head. "Sorry Ruby," she said. "This cake is just for me."

Ruby sighed and shook her head. "I'm sorry Sapphie," she said. She pulled her body back and her eyes unsparkled. "It's ok. I'll go see if I can find any cookies in the pantry."

Ruby flashed Sapphie a nice smile before skipping off to the pantry.

Sapphie let out a sigh of relief and slunk back into her chair. She was glad it went well. Considering how Ruby was she was worried she might have to deal with her for a while.

She closed her book down and got to work preparing all of the frosting and other chocolate extras she was going to put into her super chocolate cake.

And so she worked on stirring up the various chocolate mixtures. She had a cookbook in front of her and different bookmarks in the different pages with instructions for each of the different chocolate mixtures. She read each one carefully, double checking each step she made to make sure she didn't make any mistakes.

But as she was stirring up the chocolate frosting she could hear footsteps in the distance. She spun her head slowly to see Sango standing right by the oven staring into it. Her mouth was drooling and her ears were weak. Her eyes were sparkling like Ruby's. Her tail was swishing back and forth and a loud purring noise could be heard echoing throughout the room. Sapphie waited to see if Sango would ever look in her direction but she was mesmerized by the cakes.

Sapphie sighed and put down her stirring utensils and walked over to the cat. She tapped her on the shoulder. "Hello?"

"Sapphie!" Sango cheered. Her vision finally left the cakes and snapped to meet the dog's gaze. She was breathing heavily. "Are these cakes yours?"

Sapphie nodded. "Yes. I'm trying to make a deluxe chocolate cake."

"Cake!?" Sango cried out. Her ears stood up as tall as they could and her tail went straight. "Sweets daisuki Sango nyan loves cake!" She nuzzled her head up against the oven a couple of times. It was a good thing that the outside wasn't hot or else that would be very painful. She then turned back to Sapphie and flashed a smile on her face. "Do you think that you could share some cake with nyan?"

Sapphie blinked a couple of times. Sango was at least hopefuly more mature than Ruby. Scratch that, everyone was more mature than Ruby. If Ruby could take this maturely surely anyone could. Sapphie shook her head. "Sorry," she said. "I was thinking of baking this cake just for myself."

Sango's poor kitty heart broke in two. Sapphie could hear it shattering like someone threw a baseball through a window. Then Sapphie noticed a baseball lying on the ground right next to the window above the sink. And wouldn't you know it the window was broken!

Sapphie jumped up onto the counter and stared out the window to see a couple of Jewelpets running away.

She sighed and shook her head. She hopped down and walked back to Sango who was still staring back at the cake so eagerly. Her mouth was watering and she was licking her lips. She looked so excited about the cake. But Sapphie was so excited about the cake! And it was her cake! She shouldn't be giving it out to everyone who asked. Then she'd be left with no cake.

"Are you sure?" Sango asked.

Sapphie nodded. "Sorry," she said. She rubbed the back of her head again. She felt bad saying no but sometimes it had to be said. "Don't worry, I'll make you a cake some other time."

"Really?" asked Sango. She smiled and jumped up and down. "Sweets daisuki Sango nyan! That would be great."

Sapphie chuckled and rubbed the back of her head. "It'll be for everyone but I'll make sure that you get a slice."

"Thanks Sapphie," Sango cheered. "I'll look forward to it."

"You're welcome," Sapphie responded.

Sango skipped back away and out of the room. Crisis averted yet again. Sapphie went back to her baking and prepared the other tools that she needed to get ready.

At this point the smell was absolutely overpowering. Everyone in the house could sniff the wondeful rich aroma of the wonderful chocolate. It filled up Sapphie's nose too and it made her feel so good. It was going to be one delicious cake. She could hardly wait.

But as she was finishing up her strawberry spread she noticed that another Jewelpet was hovering over her oven. She let out a long sigh and slowly walked over there. It was Garnet. Just like Ruby and Sango she was staring at the cakes with sparkling eyes. Sapphie tapped Garnet on the shoulder.

Garnet quickly turned her head to look at Sapphie. "Ga!"

"I assume you want some cake too?"

"No! I don't want any stupid cake. I'm on a diet after all."

Sapphie raised an eyebrow and an ear. That was a convient thought although she was eyeing the cakes just like the others. It didn't take Sapphie's intellectual skills to figure out the cat wanted some cake.

But that wasn't her problem. "That works out I guess because I'm not sharing it."

Garnet's eyes turned to fire. "What do you mean you're not sharing it?" she whined.

"You said you didn't want any!"

"I was lying!" Garnet stomped her foot on the ground and clentched her fists tightly against her body. "Of course I wanted some. Do you think I'd eagerly watch a cake being baked with my mouth drooling for food I didn't want?!"

"Your mouth was drooling?"

Garnet blushed and quickly wiped away the drool residue that was still there under her mouth. "Ignore that! I want some cake."

"Sorry," Sapphie said shaking her head. "But I can't give you any cake. I already had two others ask and I told them all the same."

"Ga!" Garnet cried out. She huffed and stomped off like an immature cat. Sapphie sighed and wiped the sweat away from her brow. This was getting tired. She went back to her work and hoped she could complete it without anyone else annoying her.

Soon enough the oven process was done. The baking had subsisded. Sapphie pulled the cakes out of the oven and poked them with a toothpick to make sure they were cooked throughly. Once she confirmed that was the case she turned the oven off and started prepping the cake.

She put a layer of cake down and brought out her various chocolate mixers. First layer was the classic chocolate frosting. Then came a layer of hot fudge between layers two and three. The third inbetween was a white chocolate drizzle, while the fourth one was a dark chocolate one. And with all five layers of chocolate cake all it needed was for Sapphie to dump the rest of the chocolate frosting on it and smooth it out.

So that's what she did! She smoothed all of the chocolate frosting onto the cake until it was neatly covered with chocolate. It looked so big, so rich, and so chocolatey. Sapphie brought out her phone and took a picture of her cooking. She was very eager to eat it all up. But first she had to be a responsible dog and clean up her mess.

She walked around the room and started putting the cooking materials she used into the sink and washing them out. She put the trash in the trash, and she put all of the ingredients away. But as she lifted herself up to put the sugar back in the sugar drawer a quick bunny hopped into the room and grabbed the plate with the cake.

Sapphie quckly noticed it out of the corner of her eye. "Jewel flash!" she cried out. She summoned her jewel magic to create a large sticky net that took up the exit way. The scheming bunny ran directly into it. Plop! She landed face first in it. Luckily she was still holding the cake upright.

Of course it was Ruby. Sapphie could feel some frustration building up. She thought she was done with all of these annoying cake beggars. She took a moment to regain her patience. She took a deep breath in and a deep breath out before she climbed back down and walked over to the door.

"I thought you were looking for cookies," Sapphie said. She put her hands on her hips.

Ruby chuckled. "I did but I wanted more. I couldn't forget about the tasty cake you were making. It smelled so good."

Sapphie smiled. She pet Ruby's head. "Thanks. I'm sorry you couldn't try any this time but next time you'll get some."

"Thanks," Ruby said with a smile.

But as she was petting Ruby, Sango appeared with sparkles in her eyes. She swiped at the net with her claws and grabbed the cake from the other side. And like Ruby she started to run off out of the kitchen.

Sapphie groaned. This wasn't going to be easy. Another Jewel Flash and this time a giant baseball glove appeared right in Sango's trail. Sango ended up running directly into it. Just like the net it was sticky and so the cat was stuck there in the massive glove, still holding the cake up.

"Not you too," Sapphie whined.

"I'm sorry Sapphie," Sango said. "I wanted to be a good cat and wait for the next cake you made but I could smell it and it made me want more. I couldn't help myself when I saw it in Ruby's hands. I'm sorry."

Sapphie sighed and walked over to Sango. She was going to pet Sango's head but being a smarter dog from the mistakes of a minute ago she swiped the cake back.

"It's ok," Sapphie said. Her gentle expression lasted for a couple of seconds before she pounded her foot down and the softness in her voice was replaced with the stern tiredness of an overtaxed parent. "But I'm sorry, no one is getting any of this cake but me. If you're both good and clean up the rest of the kitchen for you I'll make you a cake tomorrow."

"You mean it?" cried out the two together.

"I mean it," Sapphie said with a smile.

They cheered, and Sapphie exited stage left to eat her cake. When she got back into her room she sat down with her cake and cut herself a slice. She dug her fork into it and piled it into her mouth. She could feel the rich chocolate flavors all combining together to make a rich wonderful chocolatey treat. It filled her with so much happiness. She chomped it down eagerly and her mouth drooled a little bit. A bit of chocolate cake cooking and standing up for yourself was well worth it to get these results. Sometimes it was good to treat yourself. The dog enjoyed her full cake that whole day, enriched in the rich tastes and feeling a joy that one would call happiness.
