PART 1

EXT. OUTER SPACE (STOCK) – FORTITUDE (VFX)

leisurely travels along.

CAPTAIN XERIUS CRETAK (V.O.)

Captain’s Log, Stardate 81804.5. It has been a fortnight since we’ve encountered anything of note. I am considering ordering a course deviation if we don’t find something to pique our interest soon.

INT. USS FORTITUDE – BRIDGE – DAY

CRETAK and COMMANDER KETHYK CH’VROLOC sit at the conn. Look over paperwork on PADDS. BEEP from the helm. They look up. LIEUTENANT JUNIOR GRADE KIVAL HAROL smiles.

HAROL

There’s an M-Class planet zero-point-six light-years away, bearing three-one-two mark seven-four.

CRETAK

     Set a course.

EXT. OUTER SPACE (STOCK) – FORTITUDE (VFX)

warps off.

INT. USS FORTITUDE – BRIDGE – DAY

The ship comes to a stop. On the VIEWSCREEN is a PLANET. LIEUTENANT COMMANDER SANOK JOLET looks up from Security/Tactical.

SANOK

Scans of the planet show it is populated by warp-capable humanoids, Captain.

(off BEEP)

Transport (trans-PORT) has been initiated from the surface.

WHOOSH. SEVERAL UNFAMILIAR ALIENS MATERIALIZE. Ch’Vroloc is immediately on his feet. Sanok draws his PHASER. The aliens aren’t perturbed by this. They merely look around the Bridge with interest. Cretak’s eyes follow them.

CRETAK

     Stand down, Commanders.

Reluctantly, they do. One of the aliens turns. Sizes up the crew. Steps toward Cretak.

KALIN

(in Ivita)

Ta’a peka bi Ivita. Ta’a en vo woko. [taah-AH peck-AH bee ee-veet-AH. Taah-AH en voh wock-oh.] (We are the Ivita. We come in peace).

None understand her. Cretak presses his combadge.

CRETAK

Cretak to all hands. We have visitors. For the duration of their stay, everyone is to speak Klingon or English in their company. Cretak out.

He takes a few steps. Pauses. Indicates himself.

CRETAK

     Cretak.

(off Ch’Vroloc)

     Kethyk.

(off Harol)

     Harol.

Pause. The Ivita leader gestures to herself.

KALIN

     Kalin.

(off Bani)

     Bani.

(off Tira)

     Tira.

Cretak smiles. Indicates himself again.

CRETAK

     I am Cretak.

He looks at Ch’Vroloc. He catches on.

CH’VROLOC

     I am Kethyk.

Nod from Cretak. Harol stands. Does the same.

HAROL

     I am Harol.

KALIN

(in Ivita)

     Ta pek [taah peck] Kalin.

The other two repeat with their names. Cretak smiles again. Points at his chair.

CRETAK

     Chair.

He repeats with the others on either side.

KALIN

(in Ivita)

     Hesak [HESS-ack].

Cretak makes a sweeping motion with his arm. Gestures to all three seats at the conn.

CRETAK

     Chairs.

KALIN

(in Ivita)

     Hesaka [hess-ack-AH].

Cretak indicates his movements as he sits in his chair.

CRETAK

     Sit.

He stands and repeats.

CRETAK (cont’d)

     I sit.

He motions for Ch’Vroloc to do the same. He does. Cretak gestures to Kalin. She sits in the empty chair.

KALIN

(in Ivita)

     Plot [plot].

She stands. Sits again.

KALIN (cont’d)

(in Ivita)

     Ta ploteh [taah plot-EH].

Cretak smiles. Moves to the helm. Points.

CRETAK

     Helm.

KALIN

(in Ivita)

     Manek vatol [MAAN-eck VAT-oll].

Cretak points at Harol’s chair.

CRETAK

     Chair.

(sits)

     I sit in the chair.

(stands)

     I sit-

(sits)

     -in the chair-

(gestures)

-at the helm.

He repeats the process twice more. Indicates to Kalin.

KALIN

(in Ivita)

Ta ploteh vo bi hesak ve bi manek vatol. [taah plot-EH voh bee hess-ACK veh bee MAAN-eck VAT-oll.] (I sit in the chair at the helm.)

Cretak smiles again. Turns to Ch’Vroloc.

CRETAK

Assign tour groups for our visitors. We’ll see how long it takes the universal translator to grasp their language.

SANOK

Captain, that is not recommended. We have no knowledge of this race, or of the potential threats they pose.

CRETAK

Which is why security personnel will be assigned to each group.

The crew are used to Cretak’s reckless decisions by now.

SANOK

     Aye, Captain.

He looks to Ch’Vroloc. Both are suspicious of the Ivita.

INT. USS FORTITUDE – MESS HALL CORRIDOR – DAY

Cretak, Kalin, two SECURITY PPERSONNEL, and two Ivita pause at a monitor in the wall. Kalin points.

KALIN

(in Ivita)

     Kat vatol [kaat VAT-oll].

CRETAK

     Monitor.

They move on. Cretak indicates the set of doors leading to the Mess Hall.

CRETAK (cont’d)

     Doors.

(indicates left door)

     Door.

(indicates right door)

Door.

He approaches. They open. He steps back. Points again.

CRETAK (cont’d)

     Doors.

KALIN

(in Ivita)

     Tebon [TEB-on]. Tebona [teb-on-AH].

The group enter the Mess Hall.

INT. USS FORTITUDE – MESS HALL – CONTINUOUS

ENSIGN MARDAN BROK stacks TRAYS on the counter. Doesn’t look up. ATTENDANTS slice COOKED and UNCOOKED TARG, organize TRAYS OF ROASTED and RAW VEGETABLES, fill GRAVY JUGS, and set out plates and cutlery in the b.g.

BROK

     Captain.

The Ivita seem to recognize him. Kalin approaches, a smile on her face.

KALIN

(in Ivita)

     Fahreng [FAAH-rengg].

Interest piqued, Brok looks up.

BROK

     Ferengi?

KALIN

(in Ivita)

To pek fahreng [toe peck FAAH-rengg].

BROK

(motions to self)

     I am Ferengi.

(off lobes)

     Ferengi.

(off nose ridges)

     Bajoran.

(idea occurs)

     Do you speak any Ferengi?

KALIN

     Standard dialect. Small amount.

Despite his caution, Brok smiles. Cretak turns to Kalin.

CRETAK

I speak the standard dialect as well. I can understand you, as can our universal translator.

KALIN

Lucrative. This opportunity is now more lucrative.

Cretak indicates to Brok.

CRETAK

I will assign Ensign Mardan to lead your liaison group.

BROK

Captain, the next meal starts in nine minutes. I have two Mess Halls to feed.

CRETAK

You aren’t the only mess worker. Your colleagues can handle your duties for two hours. That’s an order.

BROK

     …Aye, Captain.

INT. USS FORTITUDE – BRIEFING ROOM – DAY

Cretak and Kalin stand. Look out at the stars. Kalin turns back. Sits at the table. Cretak does the same.

KALIN

We like to meet visitors as they come across us. Time can be taken to become acquainted with aliens. Develop a genuine relationship. But we ask those aliens not mention us to other aliens. We don’t want Ivit to become …overrun.

CRETAK

Of course. We’ll be respectful of your asks.

KALIN

I have another. You said your crew is not most happy with restrictions that have been shared. They are not allowed to take anything from Ivit for analysis. Surveys can be undertaken, but only on the surface. No object will be taken back to your ship for any time. Crew must be supervised.

CRETAK

That’s very generous, Ambassador. The crew will be pleased to have the chance for discovery.

EXT. IVIT (STOCK) – FORTITUDE (VFX)

orbits Ivit.

CRETAK (V.O.)

Captain’s Log, Stardate 81812.5. It’s been three days since we encountered the Ivita, and their government has permitted away teams to explore their planet. Both of our universal translators have grasped the others’ languages, and the crew are enjoying learning more about the Ivita culture. Ensign Mardan in particular commands respect- Ferengi ships discovered Ivit 41 Earth-years ago and traded their knowledge of various farming techniques in flood-prone areas.

EXT. RESEARCH GARDEN – IVIT – DAY

LIEUTENANT COMMANDER TALER JOLET, CM1 KUNIRI SEEREV, and a handful of STARFLEET and IVITA BOTANISTS wear aprons and gardening gloves. Stand at WORKBENCHES. Catalogue ASSORTED PLANTS. Write down their findings. Taler scans a flowering bush with a TRICORDER. Takes notes on a PADD. Seerev is across from her. Looks at her in concern.

SEEREV

Sir, perhaps you should go back up to the ship. We can handle things here.

TALER

Why would you suppose either of those statements to be apparent fact, Crewman?

SEEREV

Your eyes are watering. It looks as though you’re allergic to one of these plants.

Taler looks at him rigidly a beat. Removes a GLOVE. Slowly touches the side of her finger to the lower rim of her eye. A tear falls. She removes the other glove.

TALER

(halting)

It would appear that you are correct, Crewman. Inform Lieutenant Reed they are senior (seni-OR) until my return.

She removes the APRON. Presses her combadge.

TALER (cont’d)

Taler to Fortitude. One for transport (trans-PORT).

She DEMATERIALIZES. Seerev SCANS the bush to begin a search for the offending plant.

INT. USS FORTITUDE – DECK 4 CORRIDOR – DAY

Taler presses her combadge. Walks rapidly.

TALER

     Taler to Doctor (doct-OR) Stadi.

DOCTOR RETAN STADI (V.O.)

     Go ahead.

TALER

It would appear I have contracted an illness. It would be wise to prepare a biobed behind a containment field.

STADI (V.O.)

(understanding)

I’ll get right on it. Stadi out.

INT. USS FORTITUDE – SICKBAY – DAY

Taler enters. Makes a beeline for Stadi, who waits next to a biobed. She immediately lies down. BLOOD transfers from her pant legs. Stadi draws a curtain. ACTIVATES a soundproof force field with a SMALL DEVICE. Takes a MEDICAL TRICORDER. SCANS.

STADI

Your blood temperature is a few degrees higher than normal. I’ll give you an inhibitor shot to prevent a fever. Fortunately, your blood is thicker than a full-blooded Vulcan’s, and you came in time for preventative measures.

TALER

(barely composed)

Talk is irrelevant, Doctor. Treat and restrain me.

STADI

I intend to, Taler. Don’t worry.

He HYPOSPRAYS her with medication. Taler’s breath has grown more rapid. She begins to shake.

TALER

(urgent)

     Restrain me!

Stadi brings over WRIST and ANKLE RESTRAINTS. Activates them. They close. She rattles them, trying to escape.

STADI

     Taler. …Taler.

With effort, she turns to look at him.

STADI (cont’d)

When your initial symptoms have subsided, you’ll use this site-to-site transporter-

(holds up DEVICE)

-and it’ll beam you inside Holodeck 4. You can activate your program there. Do you understand?

She nods. Her breath grows more guttural.

STADI (cont’d)

I’ll come back in 10 minutes and see how you are.

(kind)

     You’ll get through this.

TALER

     I… am aware… Doctor.

She throws her head back. Stares up at the ceiling. Continues to struggle against the chains. Stadi looks at her a beat, eyes full of compassion.

INT. IVIT – KALIN’S OFFICE – DAY

Kalin sits at her desk. KNOCK.

KALIN

     Enter.

Bani steps inside. Holds an IVITA PADD.

BANI

Good news, Ambassador. We’ve collected the DNA samples of everyone on the ship.

KALIN

     And their Counselor Fortitude?

BANI

In progress. We’ll need more time to gain access.

KALIN

Do it any way you can. We need to finish this as soon as possible.

Off this foreboding note…

END OF PART 1

PART 2

INT. USS FORTITUDE – HOLODECK ARENA – DAY

Taler wears combat clothing. Stalks around the empty arena. Turns. Waits. Swivels as a HUMAN TALER MATERIALIZES. It wields a CLUB in one hand, DAGGER in the other. Taler growls. Leaps forward. Ducks under the swing. Dodges the stab. Grabs the dagger. Circles the hologram. Strikes with the dagger. The hologram counters with the club. Leaves its shoulder free for a nerve pinch. The hologram collapses. DEMATERIALIZES with the weapons. This pathetic warm-up angers Taler further. She runs full tilt at the rock wall. Launches herself into it repeatedly. Tries to regain control.

The sound of o.s. MATERIALIZATION. Taler turns in time to cover her face. A blow hits the side of her head. She falls to the ground. Looks up. Sees her attacker. It’s a KTARIAN TALER wearing brass knuckles and boots with spiked soles. Taler rolls to the side to avoid a faceful of spikes. Tugs the hologram’s ankle. It tries to kick free. Turns to punch Taler’s face. Taler blocks. Breaks the ankle and wrist in each hand. Pulls the hologram to the ground. Headbutts it. Kneels. Holds its hands over its face. Raises herself to put a foot on the hologram’s hands. Stomps down. Stands. The hologram is wounded from the knuckles, but still ‘alive’. Taler picks it up. Heaves it at the rock wall. It still ‘breathes’. Taler throws it again. It crumples. DEMATERIALIZES.

Silence. Taler’s ears all but prick up. She lays a palm along the wall. Listens. Feels vibrations. Turns to the arena. Half-crouches. Puts her palms to the sand. Beat. Creeps, still half-crouched, toward the arena’s center. Slow movements. Deliberate steps. She reaches the center. Turns her back to the far wall. Moves back a meter or so. Shakes in anticipation. Her teeth bare. Beat. A VULCAN TALER MATERIALIZES. It holds a LIRPA in each hand. Its back is to Taler. Taler pounces. Wrenches the weapons from the hologram’s grip. Flings them away. It rolls on top of her. Taler tosses it on its back. Stands.

The hologram gets to its feet. Raises its hands. So does Taler. Cat-like, the two circle each other. Taler lunges. The hologram knocks her away. Goes for her throat. Taler lets it focus on choking her. Hooks her leg around the hologram’s. Bends the back of its knee. The hologram falls. Taler rolls over it. It jumps on top of her. The two trade blows, kicks, and punches as they roll around. Taler punches its heart. It recoils slightly.

Taler takes the chance to grab a lirpa. Drives it into the sand next to the hologram’s head. On its back, it reaches out with its feet. Grabs the other lirpa. Raises its legs. The weapon hits Taler across the back. Taler keels forward. Holds her lirpa to the hologram’s throat. The hologram gets its legs around Taler’s neck. Tries to choke her. Taler doesn’t want to let go of her weapon. Adjusts hold while trying to get free. Hits the hologram on the side of the head with one end of the lirpa. Rolls over and off. Blocks the strike from the now-standing hologram. Pushes back against her opponent. Uses the resistance to get to her feet. Wields the lirpa. Jabs at the hologram. It blocks. They continue to block and strike. Taler swings her lirpa. The hologram ducks. It swings. Taler ducks. She sticks out her foot sideways. Kicks the hologram in the heart.

It stumbles slightly. This is all Taler needs. She pivots. The leg that kicked is now planted firmly on the ground. She grips the lirpa. Strikes upward with one end of the curved blade. It slices the hologram’s jugular. Taler isn’t satisfied with the SPURTING BLOOD. Abandons her weapon. Tosses away the hologram’s. Tackles its stomach headlong. Drives it into the rock wall. Grabs its throat. Throttles. The hologram’s struggling becomes weaker. Taler continues to squeeze its throat. Continues to slam its head against the wall. Blood continues to SPRAY. CRACK. Taler’s grip relinquishes. She seethes. The hologram’s head lolls forward. The body collapses. Blood POOLS. Taler observes her victim. The rise and fall of her chest gradually becomes slower. Consciousness returns to her eyes. She becomes aware of what she’s done. Sees her blood-soaked hands. Her breath continues to slow. The hologram DEMATERIALIZES. Taler collapses.

INT. USS FORTITUDE – SANOK’S OFFICE – DAY

Sanok sits at his desk. Reads LOG TRANSCRIPTS from USS Voyager on the computer’s LCARS. They concern the events of the Nyrians’ gradually replacing Voyager’s personnel in 2373 (circa Stardate 50912.4).

SANOK

     COMPUTER-

TINKLE.

SANOK (cont’d)

Transmit current file to all junior (juni-OR) security teams and tactical units. Include message ‘Analysis required by end of next shift.’

COMPUTER (V.O.)

     Working. …Confirmed.

Sanok continues to read. Takes NOTES. BLEEP.

COMPUTER (V.O.) [cont’d]

Warning. Unstable bio-signs detected from member of senior staff.

Sanok’s head whips up.

COMPUTER (V.O.) [cont’d]

Identity: Lieutenant Commander Taler Jolet. Lieutenant Commander Taler Jolet is not currently under medical care.

Sanok’s tone remains neutral.

SANOK

     Computer, locate Commander Taler.

COMPUTER (V.O.)

Lieutenant Commander Taler Jolet is on USS Fortitude.

SANOK

     Specify location.

COMPUTER (V.O.)

     Unable to specify.

Sanok’s eyes narrow. An explanation strikes.

SANOK

Access Commander Taler’s location. Security override Sanok-epsilon-psi.

TINKLE.

COMPUTER (V.O.)

Lieutenant Commander Taler Jolet is located in Holodeck 4.

BLEEP.

COMPUTER (V.O.) [cont’d]

Warning. Safety protocols for Holodeck 4 have been disabled.

SANOK

     By Commander Taler.

COMPUTER (V.O.)

     Affirmative.

INT. USS FORTITUDE – SICKBAY – DAY

Taler lies unconscious on her biobed. She’s covered in bruises, scratches, sand, and blood. Stadi SCANS her. Sanok observes.

STADI

Decreased adrenaline and cortisol levels. Decreasing heart rate and body temperature. Contusion of the frontal lobe. Impacted windpipe. Fracturing of the T8 and T9 vertebrae. Minor internal bleeding. Torn ligaments. …No life-threatening injuries.

(looks to Sanok)

I’ll inform you when she’s awake.

Sanok nods. Exits wordlessly.

INT. USS FORTITUDE – SICKBAY CORRIDOR – CONTINUOUS

Sanok exits Sickbay. Sees COUNSELOR ESAS FORTITUDE headed to his office.

SANOK

     Counselor (counsel-OR).

Esas stops. Turns.

ESAS

Commander. What can I do for you?

SANOK

Are you currently engaged in duty?

ESAS

No. I’s headed to my office to review crew observations about the Ivita, but it’s not urgent.

SANOK

There is a matter of security that would benefit from your insight.

ESAS

I’ll help any way I can.

Sanok inclines his head.

INT. USS FORTITUDE – TRANSPORTER ROOM – DAY

Seerev waits by the pad. Holds a CASE in each hand. Brok enters. Holds a KIT OF CHEMICALS. Has a STARFLEET-ISSUED DUFFLE BAG over his shoulder.

SEEREV

Hey, Brok. What are you doing here?

BROK

I’ve been assigned to klisht duty with you. Because Commander Taler’s ill, Lieutenant Reed had to find a replacement. They asked Lieutenant Abutbul if she could spare anyone, and since I was working in the biochemistry lab, I heard, and I volunteered.

SEEREV

You volunteered to spend the rest of the day surrounded by manure? You hate germs.

BROK

But I love chemical analysis and agricultural practices. I’ve also brought protective gear for us.

He raises the bag. Seerev notices Brok looks less than enthusiastic. Eyes the pad warily.

SEEREV

The transporter’s nothing to be afraid of. Dozens of protocols were added since the Assimilation.

BROK

I’m sure that’s a great comfort to the victims.

SEEREV

It didn’t happen to anyone on Fortitude. Less than a week before the fleet-wide linkup, we were apprehended by the Yattho and Commander Sanok disabled the ship.

BROK

Therefore, not a single person here is truly afraid. Therefore, they aren’t rationalized with experience.

SEEREV

(softer)

Look, I was afraid. We all were. We’d had no contact with Starfleet for months, and when we were finally released and able to send for help, four ships on Red Alert arrived and put us in quarantine. It was only a fortnight after that we learned what had happened. We were petrified. We could have so easily been victims ourselves. Not to mention our worries for our friends and families.

BROK

Three Earth-months of imprisonment is largely preferable to assimilation.

SEEREV

I’m not denying that. All I’m saying is that none of us were unaffected. …What was it like at the Academy during that time?

His voice is caring, sincere. A beat.

BROK

…The transporters weren’t used once during the rest of my studies. None of us left the city, most not leaving the grounds. Boothby was never short of volunteers. He had to draw up schedules.

SEEREV

     You spent time with Boothby?

BROK

While possessing hu-man ignorance, he welcomed my horticultural knowledge. Commander Nog, the First Son, had instilled a measure of respect. Nowhere near requisite, of course.

SEEREV

I know what you mean. It’s been centuries, yet it still baffles me how humans have no instincts whatsoever when it comes to determining between friendly and offensive.

BROK

You’re telling me. They all look at my mother and father and instantly preconceive why they married. The Grand Nagus and the First Lady’s most negative effect on the galaxy.

SEEREV

And they all ask whether centuries-old technologies have been discovered yet, as if we didn’t develop warp decades before them.

BROK

And despite many human cultures doing so, they react in disgust to our eating raw and living food.

SEEREV

I hate that. I always tell them to go for a swim, find a clump of kelp, nibble on it and see how quickly they change their minds.

BROK & SEEREV

     Then they never do.

Laughs. Beat. Seerev falls serious. Turns to the doors and determines no one is within earshot. Turns back.

SEEREV (cont’d)

     I’m scared of airlocks.

BROK

(unconvinced)

     Airlocks.

SEEREV

I avoid them like the Terrellian plague. I’m always terrified if I go anywhere near one, it’ll open and I’ll be blown outside. I’ve memorized their locations on every space installation I’ve been.

BROK

     Really.

SEEREV

     Really.

Beat. Brok can tell he’s sincere. Nods.

BROK

     Thanks.

The doors open. A TRANSPORTER TECH enters. Goes to the station. LIEUTENANT GAAVRA GREKRAL follows. Carries a GEAR BAG. Looks wistful.

GREKRAL

You’re fortunate. I never thought I’d be disappointed about having to catalog building materials. What’s your favorite kind of manure?

SEEREV

You can’t go wrong with Mignile Coast manatee. The high concentration of seaweed in their diet provides a host of nutrients.

BROK

I prefer compost. It’s an excellent way to use up ‘kitchen scraps’.

His tone suggests he disparages those, namely humans, who don’t consume the entirety of an item.

BROK (cont’d)

Can you believe some people put them in the replicator? Why use real food at all?

GREKRAL

I don’t trust any harvestable that isn’t familiar with dirt.

SEEREV

Oh, neither do I. I don’t know what I’d have done if I’d been assigned to a replicator-only ship. The rifers here are bad enough as it is.

BROK

(shudder)

Ugh. It would be the first half of the Academy all over again. Fortunately, I’d brought seeds for my room in the third year. I had to share 40 percent of the food with my roommate so he wouldn’t tell anyone, but he did help water and prune. He was from Earth’s moon- hadn’t seen much in the way of real plants or a real atmosphere before.

SEEREV

     You were born in space.

BROK

But, I’ve been to most planets in the Bajoran system and six in the Ferengi Alliance. I’ve had plenty of experience with real weather.

Ch’Vroloc, Harol, and Tira enter.

CH’VROLOC

We’ll be transporting to their capital. I will assist with the metallurgical analyses. Harol will supervise the manure team.

All position themselves on the pad. Attention returned to the upcoming travel, Brok holds his breath.

CH’VROLOC (cont’d)

     Energize.

They DEMATERIALIZE.

EXT. CITY SQUARE – IVIT – DAY

The six MATERIALIZE. Brok releases his breath. Looks down at himself in relief. Gets his bearings.

Four TALL TOWERS topped with CURVED PYLONS surround the square. Stand hundreds of meters tall. The style is recognized instantly.

BROK

(defensive posture, hiss impending)

     Cardassian architecture.

Seerev gives him a comforting look.

TIRA

Yes. The Cardassians discovered us about a century ago. Helped to develop our global communication system. The towers were designed in their honor.

HAROL

(indignant)

     So it’s imitation. Not real.

(off Ch’Vroloc’s look)

     I apologize.

CH’VROLOC

(envy)

Is that horonium they’re plated with?

TIRA

Yes. We’re told we have the only mines for parsecs.

GREKRAL

More accurately, hundreds of parsecs. …Your government wouldn’t consider a trade, would they?

TIRA

I’m afraid not. We like to keep to ourselves. We have little interest in galactic commerce.

GREKRAL

I would too if I had horonium mines.

CH’VROLOC

     As would I.

They continue to gaze in awe. The others are unimpressed.

SEEREV

I don’t see any manure around here.

TIRA

Samples have been collated in the Agriculture Department building. A few are yet to arrive, if you don’t mind waiting.

CH’VROLOC

     Not at all.

Tira leads the group across the square.

CH’VROLOC (cont’d)

What are the most common mining methods employed?

INT. USS FORTITUDE – DECK 5 CORRIDOR – DAY

Esas’ head stiffly sticks out from behind a corner. He observes Bani accompanied by two security personnel. Bani converses with a pair of HUMAN CREWMEN.

CREWMAN #1

…ever since I was a kid. I love constellations, and I’ve essentially made a career out of mapping them.

BANI

You don’t feel regret, turning a hobby into a job?

#1

It doesn’t really feel like a job. I do important work, obviously, but my life is relatively mundane and I like it that way.

CREWMAN #2

Overtime is uncommon, which means we have more off-duty time to partake in recreation.

BANI

It sounds as if you have a boring life.

#2

Sometimes it is. The work can be tedious, but it makes life more fun in comparison. And Fortitude has great facilities. There’s always something to do.

Esas withdraws his head. Takes NOTES on his PADD.

INT. USS FORTITUDE – SICKBAY – DAY

Sanok enters. Approaches the curtain surrounding Taler’s bed. It pulls back. Stadi steps out. REACTIVATES the force field. Doesn’t ask why Sanok is there. Gestures to his office. Sanok follows.

INT. USS FORTITUDE – STADI’S OFFICE – CONTINUOUS

Stadi presses a button on the wall. The windows TURN OPAQUE. Another button press. A soundproof force field APPEARS. He and Sanok sit at the desk. Sanok remains silent. Beat.

SANOK

Does the Commander possess any physiological abnormalities?

STADI

     Why do you ask?

SANOK

     She is a biological female.

STADI

     Yes.

SANOK

The doctor (doct-OR) at the hospital specified…

He trails off, in thought. Beat.

SANOK (cont’d)

I was aware of only biological males’ susceptibility to this condition.

STADI

The doctor likely didn’t know it affects all. I myself didn’t know the condition existed until I had a patient misdiagnosed with the Tarkalean flu- the symptoms for Vulcans are exactly the same. It made a fascinating study, actually. …The flu’s effects on different races, not the comparison. In medical school, half my graduating class came down with it.

At the time, the subject pool was the most diverse of any. Most minds go to psychology when they think of the University of Betazed, and for good reason -it’s the best place in the galaxy for it- but the medical school has the highest number of off-worlders in both students and staff because of our more-lax-than average policies. Some would say this is foolish, and justifiably so, considering we were invaded by the Dominion, but we’ve had no major problems since.

He lapses into thought, recalling his and his brother’s time in a bunker with other military families. Sanok has taken the time to compose himself while listening.

STADI (cont’d)

(almost to self)

Zerad was in secondary school. I, my second year of university. We were some of the fortunate ones. I was beamed out in the middle of class and found myself closer to the core than the surface before I knew what had happened. We didn’t see Mother and Father until a month after the war. …We spent most of our time trying to attune to them. All we knew was that they were alive, and scared. …I transferred to the campus closest to home after that. Didn’t go off-world for my graduate degree, as I’d planned. Not many did.

Silence. Sanok thinks of himself, an Ensign at Starbase 224 assigned to Ktaris’ planetary defense. This leads to rumination on one of his least-favorite facts- being only five Earth-years older than Stadi despite his almost-doubly-long lifespan. Long, silent beat. Sanok knows he has to divert Stadi’s thoughts.

SANOK

     Commander Taler.

Stadi looks up. Sits up straight.

STADI

     Yes.

Beat. Taler doesn’t experience physical attraction. Sanok knows this. Debates how to address his concern.

SANOK

…Has the Commander suffered any unusual symptoms?

Stadi has analyzed in Taler’s DNA she doesn’t experience physical attraction. Knows this is what Sanok meant.

STADI

No. The condition is quite stable in that regard. For example, as I don’t experience physical attraction, that wouldn’t negatively impact me further. Those instincts are non-existent in a person such as myself, and in the throes of the condition would be latent enough to ignore even at its peak. Of course, it would be likely that would be balanced by a more urgent desire to return home to Vulcan, as the amount of energy needing to be expended would be the same. But this would merely be a case of a symptom strongly presenting itself. There would be nothing unpredictable I would need to worry about.

Sanok takes this in. Beat.

SANOK

What would you hypothesize to be the reason for the disabling of the holodeck’s safety protocols?

STADI

Nothing but the routine irrationality that comes with the condition. …Have you ever done the same?

SANOK

…Affirmative. …To regard the example given, it would be of interest to determine whether a person such as yourself would experience that lapse in judgment.

STADI

It isn’t about strongly-presented symptoms. It’s merely the need to purge oneself of energy and emotion, which can be overcome with meditation and exercise by anyone. For example, a person who experiences physical attraction would be able to rid themselves of it just as easily as I would.

This is what Sanok has always done. He nods. Beat. He has a new topic to address. Not very appropriate for work hours. But this is a logical time and place. Beat. Beat.

SANOK

…If so’lik were to be apparent, it would seem as though you would be expected to experience physical attraction succeeding completion of koon-ut.

The topic isn’t surprising. The setting is. Stadi adopts a neutral expression. Processes the situation. Sanok figuratively catches his breath. Beat. Beat. Beat.

STADI

…I know you don’t expect that.

(beat, soft)

     There’s no need to worry.

Beat. Slight disorientation from both. Neither quite believe this conversation has taken place on-duty. They don’t regret it. But boundaries have been significantly pushed. They’ll need time for individual reflection. Beat. Nod from Sanok. He stands. Pauses. Beat.

SANOK

With regard to our association, I view it fortunate that in our races the practice of a spouse established at childhood is uncommon for those of common blood.

STADI

     …As do I.

Beat. Another nod from Sanok. Beat.

STADI (cont’d)

I’ll inform you when she’s awake.

Sanok’s last nod. He puts his hands behind his back. Stadi DEACTIVATES the force field. DE-OPAQUES the windows. Sanok exits. Beat. Beat. Stadi stands. Exits.

INT. USS FORTITUDE – OBSERVATION ROOM – DAY

Cretak and Kalin stand. Look out the windows. An ORBITAL VIEW of Ivit is below. Kalin indicates a green swath.

KALIN

Our equatorial rainforest. My ancestors evolved there. One of our oldest peoples.

CRETAK

Earth’s Amazon rainforest has similar history.

KALIN

     Speaking of Earth people-

(turns to Cretak)

-how many of your population are artificial?

Cretak has to be objective. Speaks with indifference.

CRETAK

I am unaware of the precise number.

He aims for intimidation.

CRETAK (cont’d)

But it’s a substantial amount. The Federation has made great strides in artificial life-creation in the past decades.

KALIN

(slightly wary)

I see. …And they’re functioning members of society?

CRETAK

Counselor Fortitude is. He is treated as any other.

KALIN

But he has superior abilities. Isn’t he held in awe?

CRETAK

No more than a human envies a Betazoid’s abilities. In a society of many races, differences are more mundane than anything else. …Why has Ivit chosen to exclude itself from the galaxy?

KALIN

I could ask you the same of Romulan society. Many races we’ve met over the years have mentioned your people’s reclusiveness. Lament about difficult-to-obtain alcohol has been a common remark.

CRETAK

Romulan dedication produces products of superior quality. It’s no surprise the rest of the galaxy is envious. Illegal import of ale has been a common Federation practice since their discovery of it.

KALIN

And your government has done nothing? …Of course, we have smuggling trades. But there are departments for their eradication. What is the effect on the galaxy?

CRETAK

The challenge to obtain ale created exclusivity. Of course, manufacturers profit heavily from this. It benefits Romulans more than the recipients. However, our ale possesses a unique ingredient addictive to many. That is why smugglers still operate steadily- the risk is worthwhile for them and the customer.

His pride in the persevering Romulan hold over the Federation is unmistakable. As for the ‘unique ingredient’, his tone makes clear its nature is sinister. Kalin isn’t perturbed. Pretends otherwise.

KALIN

That isn’t particularly ethical. Crime only begets crime. You invite increasingly-dangerous behavior.

CRETAK

I have no say in the policies of my government, Ambassador. The consequences are theirs, not mine.

Pretend placation from Kalin. But a genuine smile accompanies her next words.

KALIN

What regulations are in place regarding artificial life? Forgive the curiosity, but we have none. We always ask for updates from our visitors. They’re… incredible technology. If nothing else, stories of malfunctions serve as cautionary tales. A way to prevent us from wanting to use up our resources to build them.

CRETAK

There have been many restrictions imposed for those who want to create artificial life, and on the life-forms themselves.

KALIN

Would it be possible to have access to files on such? It might help to discourage future initiatives for artificial life-creation. Unfortunately, these past several years have seen increased technological reliance. The last time that happened was pre-warp. Ivit was left stagnant until the population overcame their dependence. With a galaxy of development since then, the consequences will be much more severe.

CRETAK

I will have declassified resources provided. You understand I can’t offer anything that hasn’t been approved by Starfleet and the Federation.

KALIN

I wouldn’t ask it of you. Thank you, Captain.

CRETAK

You’re welcome, Ambassador. Shared knowledge is a benefit to all.

KALIN

If my understanding of Romulan culture is accurate, your time among the Federation has had a significant degree of influence.

CRETAK

Any experience one has had would take effect. You have doubtlessly been influenced by your career.

KALIN

     Quite true.

Her delivery is slightly ominous. They look outside.

END OF PART 2

PART 3

INT. USS FORTITUDE – SICKBAY CORRIDOR – DAY

Esas reads through his REPORT for Sanok on his PADD. It characterizes the Ivita as inquisitive, but largely respectful of boundaries. The conclusion is essentially that they’re explorers who let the galaxy come to them. Esas isn’t satisfied. He wants something definitive. Hears an opportunity approach from a corner ahead. Switches off the PADD.

BANI

     Are you Counselor Fortitude?

ESAS

     I’m.

His hand automatically swings up. Bani looks at it a beat. Takes it. Lets go. It swings back down.

BANI

I’m Bani, one of Ambassador Kalin’s staff. Your Captain was kind enough to give us access to non-classified information. I read about the ESAS program and decided I had to meet you.

ESAS

     Well, here I’m.

Bani smiles. Takes a tentative step. Looks at Esas’ side profile. Stretches out a hand. Feels warmth.

BANI

     You radiate heat.

ESAS

     I’ve a robotic body. It’d be strange if I didn’t.

Bani steps back. Looks in awe.

BANI

You really are fascinating, Counselor. Are your biological components susceptible to infection?

ESAS

I doon’t know. It’sn’t very interesting to me.

BANI

     Why?

ESAS

     That’s another thing I doon’t know.

BANI

Is there a person who would?

ESAS

I hate to give you the same answer, but I’mn’t certain. …You’ve an interest in artificiality?

BANI

Yes. No Ivita has ever created one.

ESAS

     That’s very sensible.

BANI

It isn’t because of sensibility. We’re only one planet. We have limited resources.

ESAS

     Does that bother you?

BANI

No. I don’t even like to travel intercontinentally. It just makes more sense to wait for the galaxy’s attractions to approach us.

ESAS

     I’m an ‘attraction’ to you.

Guilt from Bani.

BANI

No. Of course not. I didn’t- well, you’re artificial, but you’re still a person. That wasn’t what I meant. You aren’t an object.

Esas’ plan is working. He speaks with an approximation of coolness.

ESAS

     I know I’m not.

BANI

I didn’t mean to imply that I thought you were. …What can I tell you about my life? I’m sure you must be interested.

ESAS

What’s it like to be a child?

BANI

     A child.

ESAS

My height’s never changed. I’ve never had an evolving palate. It’s disconcerting to expand in mass, to take on more responsibility as you age?

BANI

I don’t know. I’ve never really thought about it. But I can try. Would it be too much of an imposition to show me to the Observation Deck? I’d love to look at my planet from orbit.

ESAS

It’s not an imposition. Come with me.

The two walk down the corridor. Esas is almost surprised at how well his plan worked. Debates if it hasn’t worked at all, and if Bani knows exactly what’s going on and is misleading him. Wonders if he’s over-analyzing. Tries to think of something else.

ESAS (cont’d)

How often do Ivita clean themselves?

BANI

We wash our hands multiple times daily, but only bathe at the end of each week. We sweat very little, so there’s no need to waste resources. There are exemptions, of course. For example, those in the medical field bathe at least once a day.

Esas stores a mental note for his report. They walk on.

INT. USS FORTITUDE – SICKBAY – DAY

Three IVITA MEDICAL DOCTORS enter. Stadi greets them.

STADI

Welcome to Sickbay. I’m Doctor Stadi, Fortitude’s Chief Medical Officer.

DOCTOR PILAN

     Doctor Pilan, immunology.

(indicates companions)

Doctor Vari, neurology, and Doctor Mina, xenophysiology. Our government thanks Starfleet for this opportunity.

STADI

It’s no problem. We’re just as eager to learn about your culture.

DOCTOR MINA

     You’re a Betazoid, I’ve judged.

STADI

I am. Do Ivita have telepathic abilities?

DOCTOR VARI

We don’t. However, we have the ability to sense them in others.

STADI

Interesting. Are you able to discern between races?

VARI

With practice, as takes most anything. …I’d assume you aren’t able to sense anything from us. The Ivita brain is four-lobed. Comparable to its Ferengi counterpart in that sense.

The group begin to walk. Pass Taler’s curtained bed. Interest from the Ivita.

PILAN

     Why the curtain?

STADI

     A crewmember is ill.

Pilan reaches out a hand. ZAP from the force field.

STADI (cont’d)

Please don’t touch anything without permission. A starship’s Sickbay isn’t the safest place to wander around in.

MINA

What’s the matter with your crewmember?

STADI

     They’ve contracted an illness.

VARI

     What kind of illness?

STADI

     A contagious one.

PILAN

Doctor, you invited us here to share information. We’re just medical professionals who want to learn.

STADI

     Of course.

(beat, reluctant)

The sick crewmember has a weakened immune system and has contracted the Tarkalean flu. They’ve been quarantined behind a force field so as not to infect anyone else.

VARI

How long is the recovery time?

STADI

It can take up to a week. The effects of the Tarkalean flu vary according to race. Betazoids, for example, experience a fluctuation in psionic abilities. We also sneeze frequently.

PILAN

Does one symptom cause the other?

STADI

No. The virus is what causes the volatility, and the volatility manifests itself in those ways.

MINA

How long does it take for a Betazoid to recover?

STADI

About a week for the symptoms to fully subside.

(gestures)

I have a book on the flu I can show you. It details the effects on various races.

They approach Stadi’s office.

PILAN

Do you think it will ever be eradicated?

STADI

No. Some forces pervade no matter what. There’s nothing anyone can do about it.

INT. USS FORTITUDE – STADI’S OFFICE – CONTINUOUS

Stadi and Pilan enter. Stadi takes a BETAZOID-SCRIPT BOOK from the shelf. Pilan’s eye is caught by NAME and INSIGNIA PATCHES in a small display case on the desk.

PILAN

You were in the Alpha Quadrant Defense Force.

STADI

     I was. Company Lights Out.

(elaborates)

Company one-eight’s nickname. All personnel are telepaths. Hence, the colloquialism.

He hands Pilan the book. She looks through. Stops at the DIAGRAMMED section on Ferengi and studies it.

PILAN

Their ears fill with wax, leading to infection.

STADI

Correct. Fortunately, Ferengi ear canals have evolved over the centuries to be relatively-resistant to invasive moisture, preventing the development of more serious conditions that would naturally occur. Humans, for example, are yet to develop this kind of defense.

PILAN

Why don’t you use your telepathy here?

Stadi isn’t particularly skilled at unplanned impassiveness. Mild surprise at the abrupt change in subject before his expression returns to neutral.

STADI

For the most part, Betazoids consider it rude to use telepathy when among those who aren’t capable. The nobility are the exceptions.

PILAN

How do you prevent yourself from assessing a person by accident? It can’t be straightforward, especially for full telepaths.

STADI

I take inhibitor shots. They allow me to block out thoughts and emotions unless I concentrate on them. They aren’t required, but I can’t always rely on my self-discipline. In surgery, for example, I can’t risk my mind wandering to my assistants when I need to focus on the patient.

PILAN

What do Starfleet regulations say about telepathy?

STADI

There were changes made after the Assimilation.

PILAN

Ah, yes, the Borg issue. We heard of it.

STADI

Today, telepaths are instructed to block out thoughts unless given permission by the prospective subject or ordered to do so by our commanding officer. As you can imagine, privacy became a significant concern after what happened.

PILAN

Yes. Fortunately, our non-use of warp technology has prevented us from being targeted by those of their kind. Another reason why we keep to ourselves.

Stadi smiles, not offended.

STADI

The lab here has a replicator to translate medical texts. We can make you a copy of the book there.

He gestures for her to exit. Follows, in thought. His expression suggests slight suspicion.

EXT. – CITY BALCONY – IVIT – DAY

Ch’Vroloc, Grekral, and Tira look out over the CITY. Tira indicates and addresses buildings. Ch’Vroloc and Grekral take NOTES on PADDs, faces neutrally grim. The charm of Ivit has worn off.

TIRA

As you can see, inspiration from the bat’leth was taken for the design of our Interplanetary Conflict Museum’s exterior. It’s constructed from Klingon materials, with the exterior plated in baakonite.

Ch’Vroloc speaks with restrained offense.

CH’VROLOC

Why a Klingon weapon? And what was the compensation?

TIRA

Unfortunately, our first contact with the Empire wasn’t peaceful. We were seen as prospective subjects during a time of relentless expansionism. After proving our defensive capabilities, a stalemate was eventually agreed upon, the Museum a condition of it. Your people would add our weaponry knowledge to theirs and leave us alone; we would construct a reminder of those who nearly forced our subjugation for all who would visit. As such an obvious symbol of the Empire, it’s proved an effective deterrent to would-be attackers. We informally refer to it as the “Klingon Embassy”.

Ch’Vroloc feels he’s deserved a scowl. Grekral tries to maintain the diplomacy.

GREKRAL

What insulation techniques do you use for it?

TIRA

A combination of various. As a matter of fact, Tellarites contributed. In return, we provided your representatives with our knowledge of Vulcan irrigation techniques. This was before your Federation, obviously. As a token of gratitude, our global insulation manufacturer has a simplified diagram of your system as its logo.

Grekral attempts to invoke her Starfleet politeness training to conceal her distaste. Speaks stiffly.

GREKRAL

A unique idea. I am sure it’s thought of often.

TIRA

Yes. In the dry season, we’re grateful. And in the cold season, we’re thankful for Andorian innovation.

CH’VROLOC

(displeased)

     Andorian.

TIRA

We evolved in temperate areas. We wouldn’t have populations in places with cold weather if it weren’t for your people. They also contributed to our mining knowledge. In return, we presented samples of any substance they requested. It’s likely they would have invaded us, had their ship not been damaged in an incursion. They made a forced landing and we did our best to assist them. That was our first discovery of warp-speed travel and the seminal reason we’ve never left the system.

These words further irritate Ch’Vroloc and Grekral. They now thoroughly dislike Tira and the Ivita. Know they have to pretend otherwise. Ch’Vroloc tries to sound neutral.

CH’VROLOC

     The metallurgical samples.

TIRA

     Ah, yes. This way.

She turns. Exits the balcony. The officers follow.

INT. IVIT – MANURE WAREHOUSE – DAY

Harol sits atop a workbench, stocked shelves in the b.g. Works on a PADD. Brok and Seerev wear protective suits. Brok packs CONTAINERS OF VARIOUS CHEMICALS back in their kit. Seerev takes notes on a PADD. Finishes writing.

SEEREV

And… done. That’s the last sample.

He seals the last container of manure. Puts it in a STORAGE BOX. Harol slides off the bench. Takes the box.

HAROL

     I’ll put it back.

She walks off. Seerev leans to the side to stretch. His tricorder falls from his belt. Slides across the floor. Hits a previously-unnoticed force field. It FIZZLES. Brok and Seerev stare.

SEEREV

     Did you just see that?

BROK

     I did.

He cautiously approaches. Extends a finger. ZAP.

BROK (cont’d)

Well, force fields don’t necessarily mean something is being hidden.

SEEREV

They do when they’re completely silent. And when it seems all they hide is a wall.

(picks up tricorder)

Stick your finger in it again.

BROK

You stick your finger in it.

Seerev does. ZAP. FLUCTUATION on the tricorder.

SEEREV

(off tricorder)

Interesting. A spike in energy readings. …Touch it with your shoe.

Brok complies. No zap.

BROK

     It specifically deters bio-organic material.

SEEREV

But doesn’t cause harm. …Probably just a safety precaution.

BROK

To stop a person from touching a wall?

They look at each other. Resolve to investigate further. Harol walks back into frame.

HAROL

     What are you doing?

BROK

Wondering why there aren’t any shelves on this wall.

HAROL

     It’s likely load-bearing or similar.

She presses her combadge. No sound. Frown.

HAROL (cont’d)

Remain here. I’ll try to contact Commander Ch’Vroloc from the corridor.

She exits. Brok and Seerev look at each other. Now’s their chance.

SEEREV

How do we get past the force field?

BROK

I’m a chemist, not an engineer.

SEEREV

     Exactly. Use your chemicals.

BROK

We’re Starfleet officers. This isn’t very becoming.

SEEREV

     You’re an officer. I’m a non-com.

BROK

     We’re still junior.

SEEREV

Which means we have less responsibility. Less responsibility means less repercussions.

BROK

…I can’t believe I’m letting you talk me into this.

SEEREV

If part of you wasn’t interested, I wouldn’t be.

BROK

…Fine. But if the Prophets determine my intentions don’t outweigh my actions, I promise you I’ll find a way to drag you down to the Vault of Eternal Destitution with me.

SEEREV

Well, I’d have to split my time between there and Ukoaad, but I should be able to manage. …How do we get past the force field? An explosive?

BROK

That’s too overt. All we need is to find and disable the emitters. …Find a way to lock the doors.

Seerev walks o.s. Brok gets his chemical kit. Takes a REFILLABLE AEROSOL CAN and a WASH BOTTLE labeled “H2SO4”. GRATE in the b.g. Brok drops some sulfuric acid into the can. Seals. Shakes. SPRAYS. Walks along the force field. The mist settles. Seerev comes up behind Brok. Searches for an anomaly. Spots an EMITTER hidden in the floor. It has signs of corrosion. Seerev points.

SEEREV

     There!

Brok sprays the emitter. It disintegrates some more. The force field DISAPPEARS. Reveals… a blank wall. Brok and Seerev exchange a glance.

BROK

…At least everything looks the same.

SEEREV

     You’re forgetting the emitter.

BROK

     I’ll get rid of it.

He reaches back into his kit.

SIRENS.

IVIT COMPUTER VOICE (V.O.)

     Hazardous chemicals detected. Initiating lockdown.

PROTECTIVE SCREENS LOWER at all access points. Including the seemingly-blank wall. The two exchange a glance. Grab their equipment. Dive into the wall. Fall through.

INT. IVIT – MANURE WAREHOUSE HIDDEN ROOM – CONTINUOUS

Brok and Seerev land. The screen lowers behind them. Blocks off view of the warehouse. Brok and Seerev stand. Get their bearings.

The room is small and windowless. A trapdoor sits in the floor. Brok tugs. It’s unlocked. He takes his tricorder. Lowers it inside. Beat. Muffled BEEP. Brok lifts the tricorder. Looks at the readings.

BROK

…There’s a whole host of technology down there. And chemicals. And life-signs.

SEEREV

     A secret research lab.

BROK

     It might not be nefarious.

SEEREV

We’ve come this far. We’ll get in trouble anyway. It’s best we have conviction.

BROK

I’m more afraid of being phasered for trespassing.

SEEREV

If they did so, they’d have to get rid of the evidence- us. Commander Sanok would figure out what had happened before long. The Ivita won’t risk that.

BROK

     How can you be sure?

SEEREV

Because it’s logical. Now, let’s go down there.

He climbs in. Beat. Brok follows.

END OF PART 3

PART 4

INT. IVIT – CORRIDOR – DAY

Harol agitatedly paces outside the boot-scuffed warehouse doors. Limps slightly. Holds her wrist. Tira, Ch’Vroloc, and Grekral round a corner. Relief from Harol.

HAROL

Thank Oralius’ stars. Brok and Seerev are trapped inside and I can’t find a way in. My phaser had no effect whatsoever.

TIRA

     That’s for your safety, Lieutenant.

HAROL

What about their safety? Their suits could be dissolving as we speak!

TIRA

If they were wearing protective gear, I see no cause for concern.

Indignance from the officers.

TIRA (cont’d)

You can’t enter until the hazard has been neutralized. Currently, the air in the warehouse is being removed, filtered, and replaced.

GREKRAL

They’re unable to breathe. Commendable protocol.

TIRA

Preferable to breathing in poisonous fumes.

CH’VROLOC

How long until the doors open?

TIRA

I don’t know. It isn’t my area of expertise. The length of time probably depends on the chemical.

GREKRAL

How can you be so apathetic?

TIRA

Because I think it’s obvious your colleagues were responsible. They had a number of substances in their possession.

GREKRAL

That doesn’t mean it was their fault! It was likely an accident.

TIRA

That doesn’t erase their responsibility. I’ll wait here with you until the doors unlock.

Grekral and Harol exchange exasperated looks. Ch’Vroloc knows he has to be diplomatic. Restrains his hostility.

CH’VROLOC

     That is appreciated. Thank you.

(presses combadge)

     Ch’Vroloc to Cretak.

INT. IVIT – UNDERGROUND CORRIDOR – DAY

Brok and Seerev creep along. Brok stops. Holds up a hand. They listen. Brok speaks quietly.

BROK

The biochemistry lab is 38 meters to the right. It has equipment on par with Starfleet standard.

SEEREV

How could you possibly know that?

BROK

I can hear the vibration of a mass spectrometer. It’s almost identical to the ones from ours.

(off Seerev’s raised eyebrow)

My father spent a lot of time teaching us to use our lobes to their full extent. I could hear from Deck 1 to Deck 20 if I wanted.

SEEREV

Impressive. I can only hear from 1 to 16.

He steps forward. Brok holds out an arm.

BROK

I’ll go first. I’m your superior.

SEEREV

Actually, I’m yours. When Commander Taler had to be taken off the assignment, I became senior. You weren’t officially granted command, which means I’m still in charge.

BROK

I was just trying to keep you out of danger- you’re married, I’m not. But by all means, go first.

SEEREV

     I will. Thank you.

He creeps down the corridor. Brok follows, eyes on his tricorder. They reach the lab doors. Pause.

SEEREV (cont’d)

There’s one just inside the doors.

BROK

Didn’t we just establish I can hear better than you?

SEEREV

Just be quiet and keep listening.

BROK

     Aye, sir.

Beat. Seerev frowns slightly.

SEEREV

If we stay low, we should be able to get behind the nearest workbench. On my mark… go.

They crouch low. Approach the doors. ZAP! They hit a force field. It throws them backward.

INT. IVIT – UNDERGROUND CORRIDOR – DAY

Brok and Seerev lie supine and unconscious. Two IVITA BIOCHEMISTS stand over them, PADDs in hand.

BIOCHEMIST #1

We’ll have to tighten our security protocols.

BIOCHEMIST #2

Maybe ask if the entrance can be hidden elsewhere.

#1

The manure warehouse is the least-frequented place in the building. It isn’t our fault Starfleet is so interested in excrement.

#2

But it is our fault they discovered the lab. How long will it take to return them?

#1

The younger one should be fairly simple, but we need to take extra care with his cranial scans. Have we identified the other’s race yet?

#2 looks through RESULTS on her PADD below an IMAGE taken of the unconscious Seerev.

#2

Osinla. Evolved from cold-blooded hippocampi. …We have no knowledge of races with matching criteria.

#1 thinks.

#1

Hmm. Compare with Xindi-Aquatic and proto-Betazoid, then Xyrillian and Lan’Tuana.

#2

     Yes, sir.

BEEP. #1 looks at his PADD.

#1

Significant levels of psilosynine in his paracortex. Telepathic abilities, likely more pronounced than Vulcans but to a lesser extent than Betazoids.

#2 SCANS Seerev’s body. Reads.

#2

An aggregate respiratory system comprised of both gills and lungs. Fairly-rapid metabolism and relatively-small stomach. Gestational pouch, protected by bone plating. Webbed fingers and toes.

She compares with the information on her PADD.

#2 (cont’d)

Conforms to available knowledge on the Osinla from the Fortitude’s data banks. A typical specimen.

#1

Download all they have on the race and arrange a team. We don’t have much time.

INT. IVIT – WAREHOUSE – DAY

The doors open. Ch’Vroloc, Grekral, Harol, and Tira enter to find Brok and Seerev in their suits, SCANNING the air.

SEEREV

     It’s safe to enter.

He smiles at the joke. Ch’Vroloc doesn’t.

CH’VROLOC

     Crewman. Ensign. Explain.

BROK

One of my chemicals must have set off the alarm. We fell unconscious, only waking shortly before you entered. The air in here must have been replaced. Our suits had nothing to filter.

Ch’Vroloc takes the chance to depart. Addresses Tira.

CH’VROLOC

It’s necessary to return to the ship for medical examination. Another team will complete our tasks.

Tira nods, hiding relief.

INT. USS FORTITUDE – SICKBAY – DAY

Brok and Seerev sit on biobeds. Stadi SCANS them. Harol hovers in the b.g. next to Sanok.

STADI

(off tricorder)

You’ve both ingested neurastazine, formulated to place a person’s biological functions in temporary stasis. Additionally, it has been known to affect short-term memory in humans. Your engrams would suggest the both of you are also susceptible.

(beat)

It would make a fascinating study.

SEEREV

And apart from that, we’re all right? We haven’t contracted anything?

STADI

Everyone is completely fine. Nothing to worry about.

SANOK

     If that is all, Doctor?

STADI

Yes. Brok and Seerev, you can be discharged in half an hour.

He departs. Sanok turns to the others.

SANOK

Crewman, Ensign, Lieutenant Junior Grade. Your incident and analysis reports are required by 1700. Transmit them directly to my office.

BROK & SEEREV & HAROL

     Aye, sir.

Sanok inclines his head and departs. Harol looks abashed.

HAROL (cont’d)

     I apologize. I shouldn’t have left.

BROK

Why are you guilty? You weren’t even there. We triggered the alarm.

SEEREV

‘We’ had nothing to do with it. I took a course in stealth techniques at Academy training.

HAROL

The alarm doesn’t matter. I was an away-team leader. A captain never abandons their crew.

SEEREV

You should ask the Doctor to scan you. You’ve been affected by something.

BROK

     A humility virus.

HAROL

Can the two of you simply react appropriately?

(pulling-rank lightbulb)

     That’s an order.

(grin)

I could get used to this.

BROK

     Don’t.

HAROL

Have I not earned some time to boast, my dear friends? Remember, I was the person who saved all of our lives from the Kahvata by executing a highly-dangerous maneuver never performed outside of training. We’d all be dead if not for my efforts.

SEEREV

The tone in which you say that suggests you’ve spent time practicing it in order to replicate your success, should you be challenged to do so.

Harol folds her arms. This annoyance proves Seerev right.

INT. USS FORTITUDE – HOLODECK MESS HALL GALLEY – DAY

Taler wears her Sickbay gown and gloves. Stands tall and restrained at a counter. COOKING EQUIPMENT, UTENSILS, and PLOMEEK SOUP INGREDIENTS are on it. She steadily reaches for a cutting board. Her hand trembles slightly. She stops. Stills her hand. Continues. Places the board in front of her. Pause. Turns her head. Reaches for a chef’s knife. Grips the handle tightly. Relinquishes. Holds out her hand. Makes the fingers flatten. Picks up the knife. Restrainedly grips. Places it on the board. Her hand goes to her side.

She puts her eyes on a plomeek. Raises her hand. Reaches. Picks it up. Her grip is too tight- the skin bruises. She lowers her hand. Turns. Sets the fruit aside. Picks up another. Same effect. She exhales slightly. Straightens her posture. Slowly reaches out. Takes a third plomeek. It remains intact. She puts it over the board. Begins to lower it. It and her hand tremble. She stops. Straightens her fingers. The plomeek lands on the board.

Taler loses what composure she had. Hurls the plomeek out into the dining area. It smashes against a window. The knife follows. The cutting board. Ingredients. Equipment. Utensils. Taler turns to the rest of the galley. Smashes PLATES. Throws POTS and PANS. Pulls APPLIANCES from the walls. Pushes them to the ground. Leaps over them. Twists and turns. Sweeps. Punches. Kicks. Utter destruction. Beat. She looks around. Is still conscious of her actions, but slowly losing control. Long beat. She begins to laugh. Tears run down her face. She laughs hard and long. Sinks to her knees. Collapses onto her back. An internal struggle. She tries to regain composure.

She eventually stops laughing. Is able to stand. Turn distractedly in a circle. Put her hands together with the pointer fingers sticking out. Close her eyes. Exhale deeply. Gain enough composure for the next command.

TALER

     Computer, activate program Taler-meditation-psi.

INT. USS FORTITUDE – HOLODECK VULCAN MOUNTAINTOP – CONT.

A rocky outcrop underneath a night sky MATERIALIZES. A mountain range among the desert stretches for kilometers. Stars provide the light.

Taler falls to her hands and knees. Slowly pushes herself backward into a seated position. Sits cross-legged. Closes her eyes. Interlocks fingers with the pointers sticking out. Trembles slightly as she concentrates.

INTERCUT WITH:

INT. USS FORTITUDE – HOLODECK ARENA – DAY

FLASHBACK to Taler’s ‘killing’ the Vulcan hologram.

INT. USS FORTITUDE – HOLODECK ARENA – DAY

FLASHBACK to Taler’s ‘killing’ the Ktarian hologram.

BACK TO THE MOUNTAINTOP

Taler’s eyes are still closed. But her breath is staccato. She tries to concentrate. Slows her breath.

INTERCUT WITH:

INT. USS FORTITUDE – HOLODECK ARENA – DAY

FLASHBACK to Taler’s nerve-pinching the human hologram.

INT. USS FORTITUDE – HOLODECK ARENA – DAY

Combat-clothing Taler whirls around. Sees Sickbay-gown Taler. S.G. reaches out to C.C. Grips her shoulder.

C.C. tries to throw S.G.’s hand off her. Tries to move away. Finds her feet planted firmly on the ground. Hands stuck to her sides. C.C. trembles. Slowly, slowly succumbs. Collapses to the ground, eyes closed.

S.G.’s hand falls to her side. She stares down at her counterpart impassively.

BACK TO THE MOUNTAINTOP

Taler breathes slowly, deliberately. Beat. Beat. Her body stills. Breath slows. Beat. Her breath stops. She’s completely still.

Pan out as Taler continues to sit, in a trance so deep it’s almost death.

INT. USS FORTITUDE – SICKBAY CORRIDOR – NIGHT

Sanok and Esas approach from opposite ends. Stop in the middle- a prearranged meeting place.

ESAS

     Commander, I’ve completed my report.

SANOK

Counselor. I would estimate you have found cause for suspicion of the Ivita.

ESAS

     Yes. You’ve as well.

SANOK

Indeed. As have Doctor Stadi, Commander Ch’Vroloc, and Lieutenant Grekral. Observations from other personnel have also been noted.

ESAS

I associated with Bani and made inquiries of the personnel he interacted with.

They take out PADDs. Esas transfers a file to Sanok’s.

ESAS (cont’d)

Commander, my assessment’s that the Ivita’re a deceptive threat. I recommend treatment as such.

SANOK

Acknowledged, Counselor. The intelligence will be collated and submitted to the Captain. It is recommended you report to your place in the farewell contingent. Untimeliness would arouse suspicion.

ESAS

     Yes, Commander.

He puts away his PADD. Departs. Sanok moves to the side of the corridor. Begins to review Esas’ information on his PADD.

INT. USS FORTITUDE – SICKBAY – NIGHT

The place is deserted. Taler lies propped up by pillows. Is weak, but recovering. Apparently hears a noise. The doors open. Sanok enters. Approaches. Pauses. Sits in the bedside chair.

TALER

     Brother.

SANOK

Sister.

Beat. Both are clearly uncomfortable.

SANOK

You are afflicted by this condition.

Sanok’s awareness is news to Taler.

TALER

Indeed. …Additionally, it would appear that you are.

SANOK

     Indeed.

Simultaneously, they recall childhood memories of their parents having fallen ill at several-year intervals.

SANOK & TALER

(almost to selves)

     Fascinating.

Beat. Shoulders straighten. Impassiveness is resumed.

SANOK (cont’d)

…I am unaware of how many times on your part it has been contracted.

TALER

…This was the fifth. Biological adulthood was met at the age of 18 Earth-years.

SANOK

The cycle of contraction would not appear to be uniform among individuals. Biological adulthood was met at the age of 20.

Taler processes this with objectivity. Raises an eyebrow in scientific interest.

TALER

Interesting.

Beat.

SANOK

I had completed my degrees and earned my commission before (bef-ORE) you came of age.

TALER

I am aware. …Have you been diagnosed with a terminal illness or similar?

SANOK

     I have not.

(beat)

Prior (pri-OR) to assignment to Fortitude, we had not met in person since I left for Earth.

TALER

You acknowledge the lack of effort (eff-ORT) on my behalf. I requested duty on Janeway. I neglected my duties as a sibling. The outcome has been …less than favorable.

SANOK

Fault is also mine. I did not invite you to visit when you were at university.

TALER

I inhabited Ktaris for six years. I did not request to visit the base. There were many opportunities for interaction. I did not avail myself of them.

(beat)

Until four years ago, we had never referred to the other by given name. Now, the use of given name is necessitated by the other’s presence. It is… disconcerting that it is the apparency of a professional context which requires us to conduct ourselves in a manner so informal.

SANOK

Inference made by others has created a feigned closeness. A bond that has not been truly had for decades. …It is a situation found to be undesirable.

TALER

That is a perspective I have also gained.

Beat. They look down at their respective folded hands. Beat. They look up.

TALER (cont’d)

Information concerning significant experiences during your time on Sisko is requested.

SANOK

…It was once necessary to represent Starfleet in legal proceedings as the consequence of Captain Tilly’s misunderstanding of Dosi business practice. Sisko had traveled through the wormhole a fortnight prior, and was detained for two months. It would have been a more extensive amount of time, had I not thoroughly studied Dosi law and utilized an oversight in their legislation regarding interplanetary commerce. The process of events was initiated when the “Quark’s Bar” franchise was mentioned by a crewmember in hopes of establishing common ground. It would be unnecessary to state that interactions between our parties then significantly deteriorated.

Taler raises an amused eyebrow.

SANOK (cont’d)

     Relate a comparable experience.

TALER

The crew of Janeway received salvation as a result of my efforts on multiple occasions. One such was an incident involving consumption of tulaberries. The Delta Quadrant varieties have several differences to their Gamma Quadrant counterparts. The pigmentation of the skin of races with iron-based blood is greatly affected. Many ill-intentioned comparisons to races of blue-blooded Ktarioids were stated.

A number of sensitivity reports were filed by crewmembers. As both the ship’s counselors (counsel-ORS) had iron-based blood, I, as the Chief Science Officer, was asked to assist the Chief Medical Officer in determining appropriate measures of discipline for the offenders. Their errors (err-ORS) were soon recognized. However, the task of repairing the damaged acquaintances was theirs. As a result, those acquaintances had not been restored by the time I transferred to Fortitude.

Additionally, as the antibiotic content of Delta Quadrant tulaberries is significantly higher than recommended for human physiology, further derogatory references to Bolians, particularly concerning composition of feces, were expressed. This contributed to existing counseling duties, and it was my subsequent task to co-develop a specialized probiotic compound to resolve the predicaments of the human crewmembers. The formula of the compound, along with the formula of the strengthened olfactory inhibitor that was necessitated, was transmitted to Starfleet. Such compounds are now required on all Federation vessels and installations situated in or within 20 light-years of the Delta Quadrant.

SANOK

     That is commended.

Taler inclines her head.

TALER

     Indeed.

Beat. They realize a new appreciation for the other has been gained, not least because of their shared fondness of extolling one’s virtues.

TALER (cont’d)

It would be hypothesized that races such as the Dosi have found persistent competitors (competit-ORS) in suppliers of uttaberry beverages. Their compositions have been studied; to races with lesser-developed senses, the preparation process would render the products similar.

SANOK

Indeed. The immediate ancestors (ancest-ORS) of the sister-in-law of Doctor Stadi have established a reciprocal agreement with Karemma farmers to grow and distribute varieties of the others’ crops.

TALER

I was informed. Three-point-four Earth-years ago, the Doctor requested an additional opinion regarding cultivation in the southern polar region of Betazed. Concern was obvious.

SANOK

Fortunately, the agreement has proved fruitful.

Taler nods at this new information. It’s unclear if the phrasing was intended to be humorous. Their expressions reveal nothing. Beat. The silence brings awkwardness.

Beat. Their ears prick up. The doors open. Cretak enters. Nods to both. Sanok stands. Approaches him.

SANOK

     Captain.

CRETAK

Commander, I have assessed and agree with your findings. After making to leave orbit, we will beam down a security contingent at the edge of range. Assemble a team to report to the transporter room.

Sanok inclines his head. Exits after Cretak.

END OF PART 4

PART 5

INT. USS FORTITUDE – TRANSPORTER ROOM – NIGHT

Tech at the station. Kalin, Bani, and Tira on the pad. Cretak, Ch’Vroloc, Grekral, and Esas face them.

KALIN

Farewell to you and your crew, Captain.

CRETAK

Farewell to you and your staff, Ambassador. Perhaps we will meet again.

KALIN

     Perhaps we will.

Cretak indicates to the tech. He pushes a lever. The Ivita DEMATERIALIZE.

Cretak gestures for the others to depart. They do. He presses his combadge.

CRETAK

     Cretak to Commander Sanok.

INT. USS FORTITUDE – AIRPONICS BAY – NIGHT

A handful of crewmembers work in the b.g. Taler stands at a workbench. Wears an apron and gardening gloves. Uses SHEARS to prune a POTTED BUSH OF SMALL DARK BERRIES. Beside it sits a MESH-AND-WIRE ENCLOSURE. The doors open. Esas enters.

TALER

     Counselor.

Smile from Esas.

ESAS

     You’ve detected my footsteps.

TALER

     Indeed.

Neutral expression from Esas. He approaches.

ESAS

     You’ve recovered from your flu?

TALER

Evidently. I am now completing neglected tasks.

ESAS

You shouldn’t feel guilty for taking sick leave.

TALER

I feel no guilt. My focus is simply to attend to my duties. For example, the upkeep of this khaf-kahm plant. I am the only individual on Fortitude authorized to tend to it.

ESAS

     Why?

TALER

The khaf-kahm berry is highly poisonous while attached to the bush. The fruit must be removed and separated from the plant for approximately two Earth-hours before it is safe for consumption. One must receive training and certification before permission to cultivate a specimen.

ESAS

Why’s it called a ‘bloodflesh’ berry?

TALER

The insides are the color (col-OR) of Vulcan blood.

She finishes pruning. Takes a SMALL COVERED METAL BOWL from under the bench. Slides back the cover. Takes a pair of TWEEZERS from the bowl. Begins to collect berries.

ESAS

     What’s the fruit’s purpose?

TALER

To provide an increased concentration of potassium, beta-carotene, and copper. The khaf-kahm berry is one of the most nutritious kinds known to the Federation. Ensign Mardan has requested a stock for the inaugural ‘Smoothie Day’.

ESAS

     Smoothie Day?

TALER

A component of the new missive to incorporate human cuisine into the diet of Fortitude’s inhabitants. Compliance has been reluctant.

She finishes picking. Slides the bowl’s cover back on. Puts the plant and bowl inside the enclosure. Places the enclosure on a shelf. Seals it. A force field appears. Taler puts away the shears. Removes the gloves and apron.

TALER (cont’d)

Has my neurological stability been sufficiently determined, Counselor?

ESAS

Doctor Stadi told me the Tarkalean flu causes emotional instability in Vulcans. I’m just carrying out my duties.

Taler stores the gloves and apron. Places her hands under a SANITIZING BAR. It FLASHES from red to green. They walk toward the exit.

TALER

Your duties are concluded. You will still exercise kal-toh in the recreation room tomorrow?

ESAS

I’ll be there. I’ve formed a new strategy.

TALER

It is unlikely you will succeed.

ESAS

     I don’t care. …I’m quite incapable.

He smiles. Looks to Taler. She raises an eyebrow.

TALER

I would advise against human humor (hum-OR) if you wish to retain your desired artificiality.

ESAS

(smile)

Did you intend for that to be amusing? …’Human’ and ‘humor’ sound similar in several Earth languages.

Beat. Taler thinks of the words in English.

TALER

     …That was not my intention.

They exit.

INT. IVIT – KALIN’S OFFICE – NIGHT

Kalin waits. The doors open. Bani and Tira wheel in two BULKY MACHINES. One has a control panel wired to it. Pilan, Vari, and Mina follow them.

KALIN

     Ah.

She flexes and extends her pointer fingers. Beat.

KALIN (cont’d)

No matter how many times this occurs, I still feel a sense of loss. I quite enjoy aliens.

BANI

I know I’ll miss Counselor Fortitude.

TIRA

I just want to finish this before we’re found out.

Kalin nods. Places her fingers on each machine’s large red button. Presses them simultaneously. Beat. Beat. A green light FLASHES on each machine. Kalin smiles.

KALIN

Privacy once again. Thank you, all. Doctors, pass on my gratitude to the lab.

They nod and exit. Bani and Tira follow with the machines. Kalin sits at her desk.

KALIN (cont’d)

Computer, upload report to the communal database.

Beat. BEEP from the computer. Kalin smiles.

Notes:

Confirmation that in our present-day language, Stadi and Taler are both ace. Taler is also aro.
I'd like to think in the future gay/bi/aro/ace etc. are obsolete terms, because whatever anyone feels or doesn't feel, it's normal (because guess what, it is) and not particularly worth mentioning. "Guess what, today I breathed oxygen." "Oh wow, today I went to the bathroom."
